The Donna Reed Show

This picture is from the Donna Reed Show.

Tonight I was able to do one of my favorite things to do. Bake. I love baking! Especially making cookies and tonight that is just what I made, peanut butter cookies. I love making treats to share with the people around me, and this particular batch of goodies is going to be shared with my co-workers to celebrate the end of a busy and hectic week.

For some reason while baking tonight I thought of an episode of the Gilmore Girls that I had seen earlier this week. It is an older episode which catches Lorelai, Rory, & Dean watching the Donna Reed Show. Lorelai & Rory think the idea of a woman staying home making food all day is ridiculous. Dean doesn't entirely agree with them, which leads Rory to invite Dean over for a night and dress up in fifties attire and make Dean dinner.

What would it have been like to be someone like Donna Reed? Where your life is devoted entirely to your home and family? You bake cookies for your children and are there to greet them as they arrive home from school. You have dinner on the table as your husband ends his day at work. Some find this existance as a housewife belittling and unimportant or feel that it makes the woman weak. I personally do not agree. I believe that it takes a very strong individual to run a home and family. To raise children to be tomorrow's future leaders and role models.

I think that there is no place I would rather be than in my home taking care of my family. I hope the day comes when I can be a stay home mom where my family is my true priority and my goal for each day is to make my home a safe haven from the rest of the world.

Me too! That is my career goal, always has been. Although I won't wear the big fluffy dress and high heels....hope that isn't too disappointing to my husband! :)

I never even heard of that show until I watched Gilmore Girls. I don't think it is demeaning at all. I think it is quite empowering to be in a role like that and have such an impact and influence on the future generation. It is a rare opportunity that too many people feel isn't as important because there is no monetary value assiciated with the job. Bring it on.

On Dr Phill there was a house wife/mom whose husband didn't appreciate all the work she did and was annoyed if the house was not SPOTLESS when he'd come home even though they have 3 little boys. Good 'ol Dr Phill made them trade places for a DAY and he was exhausted and never complained to his wife again. The house looked horrible, the kids were hungry, and their diapers needed to be changed. He appologized on national TV. HA.
